We had an excellent turnout of 12 people (and 2 dogs!) including members of Pagan Soc, local residents and three members of Northern Earth who had come across the Pennines from Yorkshire.
I told the story of St Mary's Well and described the 'sacred complex' of the pilgrim's path, St Mary's Church and Priory and mentioned this was also likely to have been a Corpse Way. On Church Avenue (its original location) I told the story of Penwortham Fairy Funeral. After a visit to the church and Castle Motte we descended to Fairy Lane in Penwortham Wood, which after its winter's sleep is just beginning to stir to life with first signs of shoots and vibrant green mosses.
On the way back I pointed out the culvert of the river Syke, the location of the Fish Houses and a Coin Tree. In addition to the black-headed and black-backed gulls and cormorants, Brian spotted teal and goosander (who I had assumed were a type of duck!). Everybody who came said they enjoyed the day.
